1. Let’s talk about locations!
Few cities offer the variety Sydney does. Whether you need sleek urban energy, sun-drenched beaches, or dramatic natural landscapes, Sydney delivers.
City Vibes: The city skyline, with icons like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, sets the stage for polished, high-end visuals. Neighbourhoods like Barangaroo and Surry Hills blend modern style with creative grit, perfect for brands seeking an urban edge. For something more underground – literally – Sydney’s decommissioned rail tunnels have been used in major productions like The Matrix and offer gritty cinematic flair.
Coastal and Harbour Backdrops: From Bondi to Manly, Sydney’s beaches are globally recognised and instantly evocative. They bring lifestyle, leisure, and that unmistakable Aussie spirit to any shoot. The coastal trails and cliff tops from Watsons Bay to Coogee add drama and scale, ideal for campaigns looking to go big.
The Blue Mountains: Just 90 minutes from the city, the Blue Mountains offer raw, rugged beauty. Think sweeping valleys, misty trails, and sandstone cliffs – perfect for outdoor, adventure, and travel brands wanting cinematic impact.
In short, Sydney gives you options. One city, endless looks.
2. World-Class Talent and Facilities
Sydney attracts and retains some of the best creative professionals in the business. From directors and cinematographers to animators and VFX artists, the local talent pool is both deep and globally experienced.
On top of that, the city is home to exceptional facilities. Fox Studios and Baker Street Studios offer everything from high-spec sound stages to full-service post-production. We often work out of Baker Street ourselves; it’s a go-to for flexible, high-quality production whether you’re shooting a national TVC or a nimble social spot.
With the right crew and infrastructure, you’re set up to produce content at the highest possible standard.
3. Better Value Than You Might Think
Production in Sydney often comes in more cost-effective than Melbourne, with freelancer and crew rates typically 10-15% lower. That’s a meaningful saving, especially across multiple deliverables or large campaigns.
Sydney’s dense network of creative talent and studios also reduces the need for travel or additional logistics. Everything you need is close at hand, which keeps budgets tight and workflows smooth.

4. Consistent Weather = Reliable Schedules
Sydney’s mild climate is a production planner’s dream. With warm summers, gentle winters, and some of the highest sunshine hours in the country, it’s ideal for year-round shoots, especially outdoors.
From November through March, you’ll get long, golden days and plenty of natural light, giving your footage that bright, energetic tone so many brands want. Sun sets are past 8pm here! The only thing to look out for are overtime. If you want an early start and a late finish for dusk and dawn shoots, you’re looking at 12 hour days (4 hours overtime), so keep that in mind when budgeting.
Fewer weather-related delays mean more efficient shoots and less budget blowout. Simple as that.
4. Things to look out for
With the bussling city that it is, video production in Sydney comes with some comprimises. For good and bad, we’re a very compliant city, that means permits and safety regulations. The good news is, it’s free for a small crew under 10 with a single camera and a couple lights (aka like a news reporter might use). Anything larger and you may be looking at small permit fees.
Sydney is not like LA where you can book crew on favours and bagels. We have a lot of protection around time, gear, meals, per diems, etc. So when thinking about your production, just make sure the allocate a realistic amound of time and budget to achieve the result you need.
Also look out for landmark right, such as the Opera House and other national monuments – while you think you could just go shoot it, you actually need full permission and right to do so. You can find more info on things like this here.
